I love dogs and thought I would try this book and I am so glad that I did. The story kept you guessing as to you was the villain. At some point, it left you on the edge of your seat wondering was going to happen and who did it. You never would have guessed who the villain really was. Allie and her dogs give a good feeling to the reader. I also picked up some pointer on training my dog! Nice easy reading.

Play Dead Allie Babcock Mystery Book 1 edition by Leslie O'Kane Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Allie Babcock has just moved to Boulder to start her new business as a dog therapist. To publicize her business, she agrees to an interview on a local radio station. One of the callers is the new owner of a collie that has eating issues. The collie also attacks men wearing raincoats and the caller believes that the dog may be able to identify a killer. When the caller is murdered, Allie becomes the new owner of the collie and becomes the target of a killer. This is a fun cozy mystery with great lead characters. Allie is great and the secondary characters are awesome. Her mom is terrific and I look forward to seeing more of her in future books. I usually have the villain figured out almost immediately, but this one was a complete surprise for me. If you like cozy mysteries, dogs, and humor then this is the book for you.
I always wonder at people who give five star reviews to books, because I generally read about a book a day (from detective, sci fi, historical fiction, fantasy, biography, etc. genres) and they are always enjoyable but not outstanding. However, I read Play Dead yesterday and just couldn’t stop at the end of each chapter. It is probably the most riveting book I have read in at least a year. Could have used a little more explaining of the red herrings at the end, but there were so many suspects that I literally didn’t have a clue who the villain was. Basically I read it in one sitting. All the dog tips throughout also were a real asset. So, here I go—five stars. And I will pass it on to my own 30-something dog-loving daughter who has just had to move back home.
Play Dead was cleverly written, well edited, with fun characters and dogs. The main character, Allie is a quirky, kind hearted single lady with a mom whose time clock for grand babies is ticking louder by the minute. Allie draws all types of "interesting" fellows; and murders seem to pop up around her. She feels circumstances compel her to try and solve these crimes. It seems she gets a bit too close to the crime situation. She needs a sidekick who can help out with police backup or maybe a romantic interest who is connected to law enforcement. I am not so enthused when my heroine is left hanging by her fingernails as the murderer is revealed. She and her mom put themselves, and their furbabies in dicey situations by bad choices. On the upside, everything is resolved in the end and the bad guy gets what he deserves.
I will definitely read more of Allie's adventures. It was a fun, quick read.
Allie Babcock was a dog lover first and foremost – her decision to open a dog behaviour studio in Boulder meant her guest appearance on a radio show would help get her business known. But little did she know it would also attract the worst kind of person.

When Beth brought Sage, a beautiful border collie who refused to eat, to Allie she soon learned Sage’s previous owner had committed suicide. But it wasn’t long before Allie suspected Sage had been witness to more than suicide – and the shock of a second murder seemed to confirm her suspicions. Would Allie be able to work out what was going on before it was too late for both human and hound?

Play Dead by Leslie O’Kane was absolutely fantastic. Filled with laugh out loud moments, mystery, intrigue and bad guys; and of course lots of lovely dogs, I flew through the story, barely putting it down. For fans of cosy mysteries and animals this is an excellent example of combining the two. Highly recommended.
I got this book based on all the five star reviews - did we read the same novel? I thought the writing was amateurish and geared toward a young audience. Her dog training methods are old-fashioned and not used by most dog behaviorist and trainers - they myth of the Alpha dog, etc. Like another reviewer I couldn't believe how many times Allida left dogs in the car!!! Seriously? I wonder if the author even lives with a dog. But my biggest complaint is....the author kept going on and on about how everyone wanted Sage but in the end there was no good reason. The ending was very abrupt and unsatisfying. I'd never waste time on any of Kane's books again.
This is the first book in the Allie Babcock series by Leslie O'Kane, and the first time I had ever read any of Ms. O'Kane's books. However, after reading this book, I plan to read the other three books in the series. The book is about a pet psychologist, and Ms. O'Kane seems to know a good deal about dogs and dog training, because she makes Allie very believable and very knowledgable. It's fun to see how Allie and her dogs solve the mystery, and there are plenty of twists and turns in the plot to keep the reader interested. It's an easy book to read, so it's just the thing to help you relax after a busy day.
