Nightsongs The Necropath Book 1 eBook Christian Masters
This is a thriller par excellence by new author Christian Masters. It’s an exciting supernatural story that grabs a reader right from the beginning. It would be easy to simply call it a "supernatural story" as I just did, and leave it at that. In the world of this novel (and its prequel, Gothic Immortal), ghosts are real, and there is a specific, scientific process that enables a "Passenger" visit the living. Similarly, vampires, witchcraft, magic, usually found in horror and fantasy novels, are at home here. But they are part of the landscape, almost incidental components in a very complex, though fast-moving story. However the real focus here is on human conflicts. Once you get past the fascinating uses of supernatural in this book, you are left with a very human story of very fallible humans. Many of whose lives are on a precipice, ready to fall over. From past experiences of my own, I identified with the plights of several characters, as Masters is very good at making the struggles universal, even though he paints them with great precision.
It starts with a child traumatized by his mom’s murder. The boy, Steven, is just under three years old. There are layers to this crime - the killer is much more than he appears. First of all, the initial culprit, who tries, though fails, to kill the little boy’s mom, plays a significant role in the book later on. After that culprit leaves the scene, a creature named Gothic, who was following the killer, finishes off the job. Gothic is a brilliant take on the vampire legend, and takes an interest in the boy, and as Steven grows up, visits him, delighting in the chase, planning to one day kill the boy, now a man. During that time, Steven is haunted by scattered memories of that night, which by then is referred to as "The Night of the Crime". What makes that even more interesting however is that there are two culprits in that crime. We learn later that a close friend of Steven’s, a sworn bad-boy bachelor named David "Li’l Razor" Garrison, is connected to that crime by blood. His father was having an affair with Steven’s mom. He, we then learn, [SPOILER ALERT] was the initial culprit. "Big Razor" Garrison was the one who tried to murder the woman. Gothic may have bled her dry, but he wasn't the only guilty party. The problem is that Steven as a young child, witnesses Gothic feeding on, and killing, his mother. He grows up with memories of a monster committing the crime.
Part of the backdrop which raises the level of conflict is that Steven, unable to deal with the psychic torment Gothic is inflicting upon him, is giving up on his marriage, though once you meet his wife Lauren, you won’t blame him. I wouldn't wish her on my worst enemy. Yet Masters still makes her human – she is no cardboard cut out “terrible wife”. She’s flawed, damaged, and even at times seems to lament not being able to handle a relationship.
Masters likes twists in his plots! David and Lauren are having an affair. So consider the irony – David and Lauren, David’s father and Steven’s mother. So for two generations, the Garrison men have brought pain to Steven’s life.
Yet another twist is when David thinks Steven is about to figure out he’s having an affair with Steven’s wife, he offers to throw off the suspicion and distract Steven by helping him figure out what happened on The Night of the Crime. David is as surprised as anyone to learn that his father played a role, but is relieved to only have to hand Steven Gothic as a culprit.
Now the biggest dilemma: How does one track down and kill a necros, a vampire? I don’t want to give anything away, but by the end of the novel, it’s clear that doing so is much more difficult than movies would have us believe.
And I haven’t even touched on the other major plot point in this novel – a witch named Melissa Thornhardt. She and Gothic seem to have the lion’s share of the fans for this book, and others have discussed them both at length. I felt that Steven and David’s conflict was under-discussed, hence this review. But each of these plot lines and stories are deeply interwoven, and the climax is truly remarkable. That is especially surprising as this is Book 1 of a fairly lengthy planned series. As such, a lot of foundation is laid, intrigues are introduced, and the ending, though very satisfying for the novel itself, erupts with a seriously cliffhanging bang!
This is the series to begin if you like fun, exciting, at times complex, thrillers. Particularly if you enjoy the supernatural.

Nightsongs The Necropath Book 1 eBook Christian Masters Reviews
It is hard to classify this great read; as it really belongs in several different literary genres romance, suspense, horror, paranormal romance….But hey, a combination like this makes for some good reading.
The little Steven is a tragic witness to his mother’s murder by an angry lover, only to be followed by the sinister shadow of this demonic monster called “Gothic” that has declared to young Stevie-“You’re next!” As he grows older, Stevie can’t help but sense the aura of an eerie evil that’s not easy to shake.
Steven and David, a real estate developer, are good friends, however David is loath to uncover his affair with Steven’s wife Lauren; plus David’s got another flame, this time a beautiful heiress with magic powers who has sunk her claws into the playboy David and is not about to let go.
David may be in over his head, but just wait until the showdown between magic Melissa and Gothic takes place…It truly changes their notions about the supernatural almost overnight. If you are a fan of paranormal (or close to it) reading then you will not want to miss out on this kind of a thrill ride.
This is a highly suspenseful and romance novel and highly enjoyable. It captured my mind first page to the very last. The language used by the author is very descriptive and it strongly transfers the image on to reader's mind. The author has taken consideration in describing the surrounding of incidents while he unravels the tale in a mysterious manner.
Steven was a troubled student at school. He gets mocked and sarcasm when he says his story among other children. While aging he learns to keep his mouth shout about his 'The monster hurt my mommy' story. Throughout his whole life he has not known that Gothic had always followed him. As a grown up Steven faces family problems. The story is full of mystery and the author move the reader's mind from one incident to another and brings back to the earlier arousing the curiosity of the reader. The story includes romantic incidents and this makes the the novel highly enjoyable.
This is a highly interesting novel full of romance and suspense and I highly recommend every one to read this.
An exciting supernatural story that draws a reader in from page 1. Aside from vampires and magic, there is a lot of very human conflict. Many of us can relate to philanderer David Garrison or Melissa Thornhardt who falls hard for him (“He’s my Intended”). She’s GOING to tame him, make him hers. But unlike some women in that situation, Melissa isn’t powerless, but a very capable witch. Most women in her place will vicariously relish the magic she uses on him.
It begins with a child traumatized by his mom’s murder. But the killer is no ordinary villain. Gothic, an innovative twist on the vampire legend, visits him, relishing the hunt, always planning to kill him. When he grows up, the man is haunted by scattered memories of that night. Then with David, he tries to hunt Gothic.
A few sleepless nights after the scary scenes, but worth it. The author’s site says Book 2 comes in March, and this King fan is hooked. This is the series to buy if you like complex, fun, dramatic horror thrillers.
