I absolutely loved Soldier of the Mist, the first book in this series, and I really liked this one as well. Wolfe's writing is first-class and his storytelling is original and captivating. The only reason I am rating it lower than the first book, is that the storyline itself was a bit more confusing and hard to follow (though the enigmatic storyline is something I also appreciate), and that Latro's inability to remember is treated more as a storytelling device, rather than part of the story in this book. It is still a masterfully told story and a compelling vision of life in ancient times, seen through the eyes of a man that sees spirits, ghosts, gods and goddesses as part of reality.

What can I say - it's Gene Wolfe.
Best concept and clearest depiction of what life could have been like in 4th century BP. Never clear what are hallucinations and what are real observations. A good grasp of the life lived when wine was needed to make water drinkable.
As an amateur student of history, as a writer, and as a lover of fantasy, this book pleased all aspects of myself and has become one of my favorites. I write this as I order the sequel, Soldier of Arete. They are both available combined as "Latro in the Mist" if you would like both and the third part "Soldier of Sidon" published 20 years or so later is also available.
Gene Wolf is an excellent author and incredibly versatile. Great book.
It's excellent. The main character has traumatic brain injury and cannot get his memory to function properly.
It's an interesting concept and well-written.
I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. Especially the interplay between Latro/Lucius and the supernatural world. The book had me constantly looking up places, peoples and people I knew little about and was glad I did it. All three "Latro" books have kept me entertained and are recommended highly to those who like historical fiction with a side of mythology.
I love Gene Wolfe's writing and I love Soldier of the Mist. This book is pretty good, but I feel like it didn't grip me quite as much as "Mist" and as the book goes on, it does a classic Wolfe shift of scenery and plot which left me feeling pretty uninterested.
If you really like Latro, you'll probably like this one and as with most of Wolfe's books, there is a lot to like outside of a gripping plot.
